Up until 2007 I thought I had it made… a bachelor living in New York City, with a good job, great friends, and a network of places that kept me occupied (meaning eating and drinking) ‘til the wee hours of the morning. I also had a perfect bachelor pad. A tiny walk-down illegal basement studio with no kitchen, linoleum floors, 7’ ceilings, and a refrigerator kept at 55 degrees, perfect for storing wine and beer. For me, it was great. However, I had just started dating someone (who would eventually become my wife), and I mentioned to Joe and Ruth Bollo how much I liked her, and I was planning to have her over. Ruth chimed in and said, “Oh, Mikey… you can’t invite her over with your apartment like that.” Now, Joe and Ruth had been over before… and were always amused with my set up, but this time was different. “No. Absolutely Not.”, Ruth reiterated. “I have to get in there and make it girlfriend friendly.” I was against this idea, as I felt I was perfectly capable of tidying up a bit before my female company, but Ruth was adamant, with an added sense of urgency, and a touch of fear that this could make or break the deal. So, I acquiesced and we scheduled a time where Ruth would come over and put a little female touch on my place, while her husband and I did our best to help (or, more accurately stay out of the way, by sitting in the back yard smoking cigars and drinking copious amounts of wine). Sometime after the third bottle of Chianti, and into the Limoncello, Ruth came out and said, “Ok, I’m done.” When I walked down into my basement, words can’t express the miracle that was before my eyes. Besides the overall cleanliness, there was somehow order. There was a plan, a flow… the place looked like… *gasp* a home. Shortly after the my apartment’s resuscitation (rehabilitation doesn’t do the transformation justice), my girlfriend came and visited my place. Having not known the horror that it once was, she was perhaps moderately impressed with “the layout, for such a small place.” While ultimately we moved together to a larger more appropriate dwelling for two… followed by engagement and marriage, buying our first home and starting a family, I’m quite certain, if it weren’t for Ruth’s “hard reset” on my living quarters, I wouldn’t have gotten past the first visit. Moral of the story? Ruth’s approach to “home” far exceeds one’s expectations. She’s hard working, diligent, and up for any challenge. She’s miraculous.
I took Ruth’s class in April. Although I have been keeping house for many years we were beginning a major kitchen remodel and I was interested in her thoughts and ideas regarding materials, organization, etc. I found this one night course to be both enlightening and very informative. Ruth had a lot of good ideas and valuable information. I reached out to her with some questions via email and Ruth was gracious and again gave me good information. She is professional and approachable to all and will even visit your house should you need personal attention! Thank you Ruth!
